Below is a summary of rules you need to follow if you want to have an account on this server of Mastodon:
Traditional social media relies on selling your data to advertisers. Mastodon is different. It is diverse ecosystem consisting of multiple servers hosting user profiles which are connected to each other. Like email, you can choose your provider and even switch it from the settings later on if you wish. If you aren't happy with any provider, you can even install your own server and set your own rules. Mastodon lets you control your data!
Traditional social media makes money by forcing users to give up their data if they want to access that platform and they often rely on that. Mastodon tries to be different, but without ad revenue, how can an instance survive? Most instances pay their server bills using donations which they depend on. This makes it almost impossible to be sure which instance will receive enough donations to keep it alive for the next year.
Jako.social is funded using web monetization protocol, which aims to be more sustainable than just donations, so the hosting bill is paid by our users and backed up by @[email protected] Therefore there is no pressure for data collection or advertising, since there are no shareholders or no reason to make this profitable, the main goal is just to get enough income to keep the servers running. No more or no less. If there ever happened to be more income than needed, it will be donated towards the development of Mastodon or Pixelfed.
Using web monetization on Jako.social is optional.
Web monetization is a way to fund websites without collecting excessive amounts of user data. In practice it requires just a browser extension, which sends tiny fractions per second of chosen currency to any website which is currently active, on some websites, you may get ad free experience other premium features. At the time of writing, the expenses are limited to 5$/month/user and there are no other expenses for the user on Coil.com which is the creator of this protocol.
Web monetization is different from direct donation, since with web monetization the website you spend the most time on will get the highest split of the monthly five dollars, and you as the user will receive the benefits on every web monetization enabled website. On Jako.social, we consider it as a donation, but instead of fixed donation amount, we have to "earn" the donation by providing reliable service, web monetization only works when the website is working.
But as mentioned earlier, using this is optional. However to our knowledge this is the only Mastodon instance supporting web monetization at the moment if you happen to already be web monetization user.
The web monetization is implemented using NGINX injection to the html so no source code is modified and no scripts are added.
